The Bedfordshire village of Harlington lies just 3 miles north of Flitwick and is steeped in history. It was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book when known as Herlingdone, and the then Lord of the Manor was Nigel D’Albini. Less than 4 miles away is the country estate of Wrest Park, situated close to Silsoe. The Park contains a grade I Listed mansion and formal gardens. The poet Thomas Carew wrote his famous country house poem about Wrest Park in 1639. Capability Brown worked on developing the formal gardens from 1758 until 1760. Harlington and Wrest Park are widely regarded as the two places which hosted the first steeplechase race in the country. The race took place on 8th March 1830 and started on the hill next to Harlington Church, went passed the Bury Orchard and on to the winning post, which was the Obelisk in Wrest Park. The idea was mooted by Thomas Coleman from his hotel, called the Turf Hotel, and he worked in conjunction with officers from the 1st Life Guards. The race was structured so that entry was 25 sovereigns and all horses would carry 12 stone over a course of not less than 4 miles. |
